RENEWED LIBRARIES PARALLEL RENEWED PARLIAMENT

When Nargis Library Recovery began we faced a very uncertain political landscape with possible closure any day. We jockeyed between D.C. and Naypyidaw with little confidence that either capital would allow our venture to progress. And we had no certain supply of books, with no funds to freight them to Yangon even if we got donations.  Three years later we have significant changes in Naypyidaw, much conversation in D.C. about which sanctions to drop, and how soon, plus an ongoing [...]

Our Three Library Readers Workshops

Check out Jack Simpson’s blog following our Library Readers workshops organized by Gayle Holmes and Sue Simpson. I am grateful for financial support offered by the  Opportunity Foundation and the considerable effort by the leadership of MBAPF in organizing this pedagogical experiment in Bogalay, Yangon and Mandalay! Over ninety participants–librarians, teachers, administrators and monks–learned how to teach early readers through a method that invites children and readers alike to ease into English through imaginative games that Gayle and her husband, [...]

Monastic Schools for Orphans in the delta

I visited a dozen monastery-based schools where some of our English language books languish on shelves. Only a very few are used by advanced students; the vast majority of orphans and kids attending these schools have had no exposure to English, either spoken or written. All are gaining literacy in Burmese, but for those curious about literature, history or any knowledge beyond their basic texts [which cost between $1 and $1.70 for all required subjects], very few Myanmar language books [...]

A Perfect Monday

Black Fridays are commonplace in this era of financial stress; perfect Mondays come much less frequently. Today achieved that stature because of five contributors: Professors Frank Ching and Barry Onouye, just retired after a career of teaching in the University of Washington’s Department of Architecture and donated a gaylord box filled with texts & references in their field; then Marc Piano located a potential donor with 300,000 books in England; and Carolyn Aamot, University of Washington’s Gifts Librarian, steered Ching [...]

Library Opened in Thingangone

By David Leuthold Thingangone [thin’-gan’-goan’] Community Library officially opened December 14, 2010, the first library constructed under Nargis Library Recovery (NLR) auspices.  Previous articles have referred to the library as being in Labutta; Thingangone is in Labutta Township. Thingangone village is located in the southwest corner of Myanmar, on the Irrawaddy River Delta, and was ravaged by Cyclone Nargis in May 2008.  Two small existing libraries were destroyed.  The village is the principal community on Middle Island, which has 40,000 [...]

Letter from Billings Librarian to Myanmar Library Friends

Letter to Myanmar Library Friends February 10, 2011 Each of you asked if I would share impressions of Myanmar libraries and your efforts to assist them, formed as a result of the December tour. I’m sending these thoughts while the journey is still fresh in my mind, in hopes that there might be something of value to you, although I suspect that you will have already thought of and discussed most of these ideas. I focus on libraries in the [...]

This month was spent organizing ourselves, sorting our books, fund-raising, establishing our new Nargis business account, and setting goals for the fiscal year, commencing September 1. Myanmar Book Aid and Preservation Foundation

Myanmar Book Aid and Preservation Foundation (MBAPF) was formed in 2001 as an arm of the Myanmar Book Centre and registered as a non-governmental and non-profit foundation. History The Myanmar people are devoted to reading, but many lack the means to buy books from outside the country, so we formed a group of librarians, scholars and writers to help meet the needs of our countrymen. MBAPF adopted the motto: “Supplying the world knowledge” to Myanmar. Myanmar has a very good [...]

Devastation from Nargis Cyclone

On May 3, 2008, Cyclone Nargis completed its devastating sweep across the Irrawaddy delta in Myanmar (formerly called Burma), passing directly over Yangon. No natural disaster has taken so many lives or destroyed so much habitation in Myanmar. This event resulted in 135,000 dead or missing and rendered an estimated 800,000 people homeless. Additionally, large areas of the country experienced huge infrastructure, housing and agricultural damage which will take years to repair. By any account, this was a catastrophic disaster.

Second Container

Thant flew from Yangon to Seattle to meet donors and arrange future shipments this past week. Thrift Books‘ CEO Hector Rivas offered one million books to our project, a portion of which will be sold in Myanmar to fund purchase of Burmese books to replace those destroyed by cyclone Nargis. The bulk of the second shipment will be children’s book, useful in all libraries for kids and adults trying to maintain English learned in school. Clair Jenkins, VP of UNITUS [...]
