Last picture is a school with attached library created by the Esmee Family Trust, with books donated by Nargis Library Recovery and Myanmar Book Aid and Preservation Foundation.
These photos were taken between May 20 and late August during Ashin Dhammapiya’s six trips to lead food and medical aid teams into the most devastated townships.

The Kids must be Happy
John Badgley
Welllll, you remember when your teacher said “wave and look happy!” But, maybe they did like new books and paper tablets? Felt good to see them try to be happy, despite so much loss among their families.

I’m sorry about their losses, too. It was heart-breaking to see the photos of the damage after the cyclone.
I was actually looking at their books and pencils in another photo, recalling my childhood memories.
The pencils look like the brand I liked, if it’s the same kind when you draw using them it’s darker, and less fragile.
I always got excited when I got that kind of pencil and white-smooth notebooks with colorful cover. As they were more expensive than others, my mom didn’t buy them often. It’s like a special treat.

Comment from U Kyaw Myaing, a retired U.N. officials and one of our supporters, who volunteered for a month after Nargis to help in the recovery effort. He returned to his New Jersey home to create the ‘Helping Universe” website.
“This website came about based on my experience as a volunteer in Myanmar after cyclone Nargis.
I worked for one month at the corporate headquarters of SPA – Serge Pun and Associates to develop their website for cyclone relief work.
During that time it occurred to me that in times of natural calamities, Myanmar people and their friends outside do not have a good place to “connect” and “to work on projects” in a collaborative way online.
Hence in the website, I used the freely available website called http://www.ning.com (founded by the originator of Netscape) and linked with our website.
The online project management tool, which we have nicknamed “ProjectPro” provides a virtual environment for project teams to work on projects from the conceptual stage to the monitoring and evaluation stage.
